Novell Announces Terminal Emulation and NFS Client Options for LAN
WorkPlace
INTEROP SPRING, WASHINGTON, D.C. -- May 18, 1992 -- Novell today announced
two options for its LAN WorkPlace for DOS product: TN3270 for LAN
WorkPlace and NFS Client for LAN WorkPlace. These options provide DOS and
Windows users access to IBM mainframes and NFS servers across a TCP/IP
network, allowing for entry into a wide variety of computing environments.
Both products are being demonstrated this week at Interop Spring.
"As enterprise networks built on TCP/IP become more prevalent, our
customers require desktop connectivity to a variety of host systems,
including NFS servers and IBM mainframes," said Bob Davis, director of
marketing for Novell's UNIX connectivity products. "When combined with
LAN WorkPlace, these options further extend DOS and Windows users' reach
into the UNIX NFS and IBM mainframe environments."
NFS Client for LAN WorkPlace
The NFS Client for LAN WorkPlace provides LAN WorkPlace users seamless
connectivity with NFS file servers and printers on a TCP/IP network. It
gives DOS and Windows users transparent access to files on remote NFS
servers, as if the files were on a local hard drive. Personal computer
users can also take advantage of UNIX printers on the network by directing
DOS printer ports to UNIX print queues. The product offers high
performance and reliability while consuming only a small amount of memory.
TN3270 for LAN WorkPlace
The TN3270 for LAN WorkPlace option enables LAN WorkPlace users on a
TCP/IP network to login to IBM mainframes running the MVS or VM operating
systems. Users can run mainframe applications without modification, as if
the user's personal computer were an IBM 3278 display terminal.
The product gives users a choice of TN3278 terminal models 2 through 5 and
allows them to use network resources productively by supporting multiple
sessions on multiple hosts. Users can perform such functions as screen
capture, print-to-disk and file transfer using the same familiar commands
they would use from an IBM terminal. The product also supports
mainframe-based applications that utilize extended attributes such as
blinking, highlighting and reverse video.
An Application Programming Interface (API) is also included with TN3270
for LAN WorkPlace. The API consists of a software library of functions
that can be used with a standard set of "C" library functions. An
application program utilizes the API library in order to access a IBM
mainframe on a network via the terminal emulator.
Pricing and Availability
TN3270 for LAN WorkPlace will be available in June. The single-user
version sells for $145 and can be obtained by calling 1-800-UPDATE1. The
10-user version sells for $645 and the 100-user version sells for $3995.
Both the 10-user and 100-user versions are available from Novell
authorized resellers. The product is licensed from Open Connect Systems,
a recognized leader in the IBM connectivity field.
The NFS Client for LAN WorkPlace will also begin shipping in June. It is
priced at $295 for one user, $1395 for 10 users and $8495 for 100 users,
and will be sold through Novell authorized resellers. It is licensed by
Novell from Beame & Whiteside Software Ltd., which has been providing NFS
client support for LAN WorkPlace for DOS since 1989.
